Board Updates October 21, 2002

To all the members, partners and friends of the Coalition for Active Living:

At the Board of Directors meeting September 27-29th I agreed to take over the role of Chair from Cathie Kryzanowski until the next Annual General Meeting in about a year’s time. Cathie has held the position of Chair since the Coalition’s inaugural meeting in November 1999, and as Chair has made a magnificent contribution to Active Living in Canada. Her vision, leadership, acute understanding of the issues that our community faces and her ability to communicate those issues to decision-makers at all levels has brought the Coalition through it’s infancy to this next phase of our work. For those of you that know Cathie, her warm smile, infectious laugh and her “lead by example” approach motivate all of us to go the extra steps. She will stay be staying on the Board of Directors and will continue to play a pivotal role in our work.

David Bosiak, our active living dynamo from Manitoba had to step away from the Board but he assures us that he will stay in touch and continue to make things happen. Don LeClair, the Coalition’s consultant from Health Canada has left the Physical Activity Unit and is being replaced by Randy Adams. Thanks to Don for his guidance and support in the evolution of the Coalition.

You may have wondered whether the Coalition was still in existence over the last few months. In fact, due to lack of funding, the Board could only maintain a minimum operation. I am pleased to announce that the Coalition received support from Health Canada under the Physical Activity Contribution Program for our work in mid-September. This will be for the fiscal year April 1, 2002 - March 31, 2003 so we are on the move again!

The announcement in the Speech from the Throne of a Healthy Living Initiative including the development of a National Strategy on Healthy Living, Physical Activity and Sport has galvanized our community. Please visit the Coalition Website at www.activeliving.ca and check out some of the letters and news releases that have been sent by the Coalition and member organizations. As well the minutes from the AGM held September 27th will be posted along with a list of the Board of Directors.

You will now be hearing regularly from the Coalition. Please check in with the website as new material and calls for action will be posted on an on-going basis. If you have anything that you would like to see on the website or material that you think will be of interest for all of us who are speaking out for physical activity please send it to our Website Content Facilitator, at content@activeliving.ca.

I look forward to hearing from you over the next few months as we move forward together on a National Strategy. We need to craft a strategy that we in the field and our friends in Health and Nutrition that will truly result in removing the barriers that prevent Canadians from achieving the health benefits of a physically active lifestyle.

Sincerely,

Rick Bell
