Board Updates December 18, 2002

Hello to all Coalition Members and Partners,

The Coalition has had a significant period of activity in the past eight weeks. I wanted to connect with you before year end to wish you all a happy, healthy and active holiday season, and give you an update on our work since the last update.

1. Advocacy.

You asked the Coalition Board to provide leadership and be a "loud voice for physical activity" and we have taken you at your word! Four significant, national advocacy activities have taken place: a submission was prepared for the Standing Committee on Finance in an attempt to influence the decisions about allocating adequate resources for physical activity in the next fiscal year; a meeting with Health Minister McLellan to raise concerns about the resourcing of physical activity and the need for the Coalition to play a significant role in the upcoming national symposium on Health Living; a presentation to the Senate committee reviewing Bill C-12, the new Physical Activity and Sport Act, that highlighted the need to raise the profile of physical activity in the act; and finally the preparation of responses to both the Kirby Report and Romanow Commission on the Future of Health Care. Attached is a report from Pat Hunt, the Coalition's Co-ordinator, providing further detail on most of these activities.

2. Physical Activity Strategy and Members Meeting Feb. 7, 8 and 9th in Ottawa

As you are aware Steve Grundy of Vertigo Management has been contracted to work with you to put together a national Physical Activity Strategy in preparation for the Healthy Living Symposium that is being coordinated by Health Canada in April, 2003. This Strategy is a working draft now and will be circulated to you for input in January. There will be a Members meeting Feb. 7, 8, and 9 at the Holiday Inn in Gatineau/Ottawa to put the finishing touches on it and to determine an advocacy action plan leading up to the Healthy Living Symposium and beyond. Please pencil in these dates. It is Winterlude, so it will be a beautiful time to plan to spend a few days in the Nation's Capital. More about this in early January.

3. Coalition Board Meeting

The Coalition Board met in Hamilton Nov. 29-Dec. 1st in conjunction with the Women and Sport Conference. Board members joined conference delegates at the Saturday evening banquet and had an opportunity to hear some amazing stories and toast the Haggis (it had a Scottish theme)!! As always with the Board meetings there is so much to do and limited capacity to tackle the tasks at hand. Top of the agenda was the work on the Physical Activity Strategy and the priorities for 2003-4.

4. Funding: Health Canada

As you are aware by now the proposals for funding from the Health Canada Physical Activity Unit are due Jan. 24th for the next fiscal year.

5. Coalition Website and Membership

Rick Turnbull has been in touch with you looking for updated Membership information as we move towards the launch of the 'refreshed' website. We want to be sure that we have all the correct information on current members, so if you haven't yet responded to Rick's e-mail please take a couple of minutes and send it along. We are hoping for a launch early in the new year and will give you a "heads up" as we approach this date.

As you and your staff prepare for the holiday break, I want to extend my sincere thanks to all of you for your dedication and continued work on behalf of physical activity this past year. It is the energy, enthusiasm and passion that each of you brings to bear on the issue of physical inactivity that will make a difference for our families, friends, neighbours, communities and ourselves. Best wishes for a wonderful, relaxing and joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!!

Rick Bell,
Chair, Coalition for Active Living.
